The gory pictures of a scared bull fighting for its survival will no longer disturb flyers in Jet Airways. JetWings, the in-flight magazine of the airline, has assured the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (Fiapo) that it would not feature articles on bullfighting again. Fiapo had taken up the matter after an article on the subject featured in the magazine’s September issue.
“The article ‘Gallant Matadors’ had pictures of bullfighting. It is a condemned sport in several parts of Spain like Barcelona, Catalonia and Canary islands. These places had a tradition of bullfighting but now people there have given it up as it harms the animal,” said the Fiapo spokesperson.
Many passengers approach-ed Fiapo after reading the article. The NGO wrote to Jet-Wings stating how it was promoting brutal slaughter of bulls in the name of entertainment.
“The audience in the arena is pitched to experience a thrill when the banderillas are stuck in the bull’s back,” the spokesperson said. “There is growing condemnation of bullfighting throughout the world. The Spanish have by referendum outlawed the practice.”
Maneck Dawar, publisher and a member of the editorial board of JetWings, wrote to Fiapo: “We assure you that there would not be any more features on the subject in JetWings.”
