The first phase of Census, which was to end on Tuesday, will now continue for another month. The extension was requested by principal Census officer Swadhin Kshatriya to the directorate of Census.

According to information available with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is conducting the survey, 10% of housing blocks are yet to be counted, as the houses were locked.

“We have learnt that 6% of homes, known as investor houses, will be forever found locked. But, we have completed the survey of 90% houses so far. We have already received 4,400 calls on the helpline numbers,” said additional principal Census officer Manisha.

The civic body will continue to operate helplines that can be used by citizens who are not in town to get their names listed.

According to BMC data, the wards where the Census drive is lagging behind are Malad, Kurla, and Dadar. The exercise has gone smoothly in municipal wards at Babula Tank and Nana Chowk (wards B and D) in south Mumbai, and Chembur, Trombay, Mankhurd and Mulund.
