Central team meets anti-Lavasa project activists

The ministry has stayed construction work at the multi-crore project following environmental concerns.

The Union environment ministry team, currently on a visit to the Lavasa Lake City that is under construction near here, today heard the anti-project activists, including Medha Patkar and noted social worker Anna Hazare.

The 11-member team headed by Naresh Dayal, deputed by the Ministry, is inspecting the site for alleged environmental violations on directive from the Bombay high court.

The ministry has stayed construction work at the multi-crore project following environmental concerns.

Patkar and Hazare, who were joined by Republican Party of India (RPI) leader Prakash Ambedkar, apprised the team of their objections pertaining to the alleged illegal construction and encroachment on water bodies on the vast stretch of land.

Lavasa Corporation, which is constructing the hill city, submitted data and statistics in its presentation in support of the project.

The team also heard the villagers supporting and opposing the venture in the region.
