The Chembur police will soon visit Prabhakar Shetty’s native place in Karnataka to record the statements of his parents. Prabhakar, who has been accused of killing his lover Kanta Shetty in his Chembur flat on October 29, told the police during interrogation that the deceased had threatened his old parents with dire consequences if Prabhakar refused to marry her.
“A police team will visit Enna village at Udupi in coastal Karnataka,” said a police officer. He added that the police have recovered a blood-stained knife and Kanta’s jeans wrapped in polythene bags in a nullah at Subhash Nagar in Chembur. These two items have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) at Kalina for a test.
The police are making efforts to trace Kanta’s mobile phone as well as her chopped hands which were thrown into the creek in Trombay, added the officer.
Prabhakar, a bachelor, and Kanta, a mother of a 14-year-old boy, met two-and-half year’s ago on a train to Mangalore and became friends. Kanta’s husband, Karunakar Shetty had committed suicide at his Chandivli flat two years ago. After her husband’s death, Kanta and Prabhakar became closer. She allegedly started pressuring Prabhakar to marry her.
On the night of October 29, Kanta visited Prabhakar’s flat located on the first floor of building number 7 at Subhash Nagar in Chembur. They allegedly fought over the subject of marriage.
Prabhakar then pulled her to the bathroom, gagged her and slit her throat. Later, he chopped her hands, legs and head, put them in four polythene bags and threw them at four different places.
