A 32-year-old real estate broker, suspected to be closely associated with the members of gangster Chhota Shakeel gang, was today shot at by two unidentified motorcycle-borne persons in south Mumbai's Teli galli area, police said.
The incident took place meters away from Pakmodia street where the bodyguard-cum-driver of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim's brother was killed, they said.
According to police, the victim, identified as Sohail Abdul Mazid Khan, was talking to his friends on Shaikh Burhan Karmudding Street this afternoon, when one of the two unidentified persons, who came on a red colour Honda bike, fired at him.
The bike rider was wearing a cap, while the shooter covered his face with a handkerchief, they added.
"Two bullets were fired at Khan. One bullet hit at Khan's left leg ankle. He was taken to nearby JJ hospital for treatment," Deputy Police Commissioner Cherring Dorje told PTI.
"Khan, who is a real estate broker, is out of danger. An attempt to murder case has been registered in JJ Marg police station," he added.
According to Crime Branch sources, Khan had a cheating and forgery case registered against him in 2004 and used to carry tiffin boxes to Shakeel's gang members, lodged in city Arthur Road jail in 2004 and 2005.
Among those, to whom Khan used to take tiffin boxes, might include accused in the 1993 bomb blast case, police sources hinted.
Meanwhile, locals stated that they heard the sounds of three bullets firing, but the police maintained that only two rounds were fired.
In May, a firing was reported on Pakmodia street, which is just a few meters away from Teli galli. Two gunmen had fired outside Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaksar's residence on Pakmodia street in south Mumbai on May 17, killing Kaskar's bodyguard-cum-driver Arif Syed Abu Bukha. Kaskar was not present at the time of firing.
Police had arrested seven persons in this connection and Rajan is wanted in the Pakmodia firing case.
