Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to recruit the 2,700 sanitation workers (safai kamgar) as permanent employees within three months. The decision was taken after he met representatives of the Karchra Vahatuk Shramik Sangh on Tuesday. The workers were protesting BMC's refusal of permanent posts, despite Supreme Court's order, just because their names were misspelt on identity proof documents.

"The workers are relieved and justice has been served," Milind Ranade, general secretary of Kachra Vahatuk Shramic Sangh said. "The 1,400 whose names have been misspelt will have to just provide a bond to BMC mentioning the discrepancies. As per Supreme Court's order, the workers will be made permanent from 2007, however, salary arrears will be paid since 2014. Each of worker will get around Rs 3 lakh."

"It is not fair to deny jobs only because spelling mistakes," said Fadnavis. "Those who were terminated because of these errors should be taken back on priority".
