Snehal Dhanpal Thorat, a police constable attached to the Local Armoury-I, has been suspended on charges of loss of his service revolver loaded with 10 live cartridges.
Manoj Lohia, deputy commissioner of police (Local Armoury-I), on Tuesday evening confirmed the development that has put a question mark on the alertness of the constabulary responsible for handling expensive arms and ammunition. After completion duty on September 18 at around 8.30 pm, Thorat had visited two beer bars in Chembur. Under the influence of alcohol, he reportedly lost his service revolver.
Thorat, who was on deputation to the Special Security Branch-I (Protection) since March 12, 2004, had lodged the complaint with the Tilak Nagar Police Station in mid-September. He stated that his 9mm revolver with 10 live cartridges, attached to the holster, was ‘stolen’, said sources.
The incident took place at Mahatma Phule Nagar slum colony on PL Lokhande Marg in Chembur. The details of the stolen fire arm was as follows: 9 mm pistol, butt no. 107, body no. 16230285, Indian make with 10 live cartridges collectively worth Rs 21,590.
