The Bombay high court on Tuesday summoned SS Virk, the director general of police, for not submitting a report on how Bunty Chugh fled with his son Sujal on November 14, 2008, the day he was supposed to hand him over to his estranged wife Priti Chugh.
“We are not going to tolerate this nonsense,” justice Bilal Nazki said. The judges were peeved to see an investigation report filed by a deputy commissioner of police though the court had clearly said in its August 4 order that it wanted a report from the DGP. Also, the report was filed in Marathi. “Who do they think they are? They have no respect for courts. They are taking us for a ride,” Nazki said. The DGP will have to be present in court on Wednesday to “explain his conduct”.
In a separate case the court had allowed Priti to have Sujal’s custody. After Bunty went missing with their four-year-old son, she filed another case. The court pulled up the police for not arresting Bunty. And the judges were worried at the rise in the number of cases where one of the spouses had fled with the child.
Sonia Miskin, Priti’s advocate, had told the court that a magistrate had given bail to Bunty’s family and they had claimed in court that they did not know Bunty’s whereabouts.
Priti’s plea for a lie-detector test on the family was pending before the magistrate, Miskin said. Priti felt Bunty could have fled to Dubai or Germany because of his acquaintances there.
