The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) building, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is finally getting upgraded to introduce several amenities for passengers. The Central Railway (CR) authorities have begun the work of installing escalators at the station.
The escalators are being connected to the new foot-overbridge (FOB) at the north end of the station that connects all 18 platforms, both suburban and long distance. According to sources from CR, the plan is to install six escalators at CSMT, some of which will be installed this month itself.
This FOB is heavily used by passengers as it connects both P D'mello Road and the road leading to Fort next to platform 1 on the Harbour line. The cost of each escalator is around Rs 75 to 80 lakh and can accommodate 9,000 people per hour. The CR authorities are working on a mini revamp of the station which was discussed by the authorities on January 26.
Green corridors are being created too wherein gardens will be made near the station's premises, one such garden is ready. Apart from this, additional automated machines will be procured to further clean the station's premises.
