The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) has recommended that 50-odd bungalows in the western suburbs be removed from the heritage list and made free for redevelopment.

The committee has said Dilip Kumar’s bungalow, The Bhalla House in Bandra (W), Akbar Villa on Hill Road, Peter Villa on Rebello Road and the Bandra Gymkhana can be removed from the heritage list.

The committee has recommended 23 open spaces, including Shivaji Park, Cross Maidan, Azad Maidan and Cooperage, for individual heritage listing. The panel has suggested grade I heritage status for the four open spaces. This means no construction can be taken up on these grounds. Currently, the Oval Maidan is the only open space in the city to have grade I status.

Eighteen gymkhana lands and gardens, including the Islam Gymkhana, PJ Hindu Gymkhana, Police Gymkhana, BN Maheshwari garden and Dadkar grounds, have been recommended for grade II A listing. The Cricket Club of India in Churchgate has been recommended for a Grade II B listing.
