Sonam Wangchuk, the ‘real-life Phunsukh Wangdu from 3 Idiots’ said on Saturday that education should be made available to all. More importantly, good quality education should not be just restricted to private schools – every Indian is entitled to quality education in government schools.
Speaking at a function by the state government’s department of School and Higher Education and Sports, where he was felicitated with another Ramon Magsaysay awardee from the city, Bharat Vatwani, he pitched for laying due emphasis on experimental and experiential learning keeping in mind multiple intelligence. “In today’s world,” he said, “mathematics and science are being treated as God and it needs to be changed. There is also need for emotional maturity. Those who are toppers in science but emotionally immature commit suicide in due course of time.”
Wangchuk came into limelight after he established his innovative school Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). He added that education should not remain a mere ritual.
