After being pulled up for her “bad” handwriting, Dr R Thorat, tendered her apology to the Bombay High Court on Friday saying that the folly was not intentional.
She also submitted an affidavit to the court stating that henceforth she would write her medical reports in “legible” handwriting.
On Friday, DNA had reported that the Bombay High Court was irked to see an ossification test report filed by the radiologist from the civil hospital at Thane in illegible handwriting. Thorat in her affidavit stated that she writes 60 to 65 medical reports a day and did not intentionally mean to write the report the way she did. In retort to this statement, justice SB Mhase, said, “That is not a valid reason even if you were writing 100 reports a day.”
Expressing its dissatisfaction over the ossification test report, the court also quizzed the doctor on her years of experience in the field. Additional public prosecutor Aruna Kamath-Pai told the court that the doctor has stated on oath that she will be more careful henceforth.
The ossification report was sought by the court in a habeas corpus case where Bhuraram Solanki, a vegetable dealer from Bhayandar had alleged that his minor daughter was illegally detained by a neighbour who worked in a bar.
When the police traced the girl in Calcutta, she was found to be married, and the court ordered an ossification test to determine her age. When told that the girl was above 19 years of age, the court sent her back to her husband’s house by her consent.
Having read the report in DNA on Friday, the court remarked that since the doctors’ mind worked faster than their hands, as said by handwriting experts, they miss out on things while writing them eventhough it might be on their mind. “It is in school that students are taught to be careful about this,” the court said.
