The Pune police will henceforth depute two policemen to escort undertrials to the Sassoon General Hospital.
This follows the recent escape of Yogesh Ashok Raut (25), the prime accused in the Nayana Pujari’s rape and murder case, from there.
Till now only one police constable accompanies an undertrial to the hospital for medical checks. Speaking to DNA on Wednesday, joint commissioner of police (law and order), Sanjeev Kumar Singhal said, “We have decided to depute two policemen with undertrials when they go for a medical check-up to Sassoon General Hospital.”
In another significant move, the Pune police have also asked the hospital to set up a separate ward for undertrials. Singhal said, “We have spoken with the hospital authorities about a special ward for undertrial prisoners. While the authorities are amenable to setting up such a ward, no timeline has been fixed.’’
