A farmer, sitting on a protest since the last ten days, attempted to commit suicide by consuming rat poison

MUMBAI: A farmer, who was sitting on a protest at the Azad Maidan ground since last ten days, attempted to commit suicide by consuming rat poison on this Thursday.

Ramchandra Patil consumed poison early in the morning following which he was rushed to the GT Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Brijesh Singh told us.

Patil and several other farmers were protesting against the compensation given to them by the Maharashtra Government for taking over their land for a dam project.

Singh said police were recording Patil's statement.

The farmers have been protesting at the ground in South Mumbai since April 14.
