Pune’s former commissioner of police Jayant Umranikar, on Friday, was given a clean chit in a case of corruption probed by JD Veerkar, director general, anti-corruption bureau (ACB). The case has been adjourned to October 16.

Citizen’s organisation for public opinion, an NGO, had alleged that Umranikar, who is currently posted as director general of police (training), had extorted money and this money was reportedly used by Umranikar to book tickets from Pune to Delhi and back for a family vacation in April 2006.

The state government, however, informed the court that Umranikar had used Rs70,000 from the secret service fund which he had reimbursed later.

Earlier, the court had said that it was a case of misappropriation of government funds and called for the ACB to probe the allegations. Secret service fund is a special fund which can be used only for cases or any other purpose which is of importance to the police and state. It is used to pay informers who give inside information regarding some gang or activity.
