Mumbaikars will have to brace up for 30 per cent water cut after Diwali as the water content in all the six lakes is not sufficient to suffice the water needs of the metropolis.

However, the municipal commissioner said it will take a decision on water cut after Diwali which falls in the third week of October.

"If we impose a 30 per cent water cut for the entire year, then we can suffice the water needs of Mumbaikars till next June or mid-July," municipal commissioner Jairaj Pathak said today.

"If we continue with the 15 per cent water cut, the water can last till May, and if we impose a 30 per cent cut then we can provide water till next June or mid-July," Phatak said.

Currently, there is 9,90,775 mn litres of water in all the six lakes – Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa as against 12,94,287 mn litres of water last year.

This means, the city is facing a shortfall of 3,03,512 mn litres of water as compared to last year. The city requires 13,00,000 mld of water.

"Though few lakes like Modak Sagar, Tulsi and Tansa had overflown but their contribution to provide water to the city is not much. So it is not a big thing. This time we have 25 to 30 per cent less stock as compared to last year," Phatak said.
