Gadchiroli blast case: Further custody of accused denied

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Thursday denied further custody of eight accused, including a woman in landmine blast case in Gadchiroli on May 1 that killed 15 security personnel and one civilian.

Among the eight accused who were produced was Kailash Ramchandani (34), who worked with the NCP as a tehsil unit president. The woman accused Uppuganti Nirmalakumari alias Narmada Akka (63) is said to be part of the conspiracy to attack the security forces.

NIA had taken over the investigation from the local police in Gadchiroli. The court refused to grant them custody of the accused stating that there were no new grounds shown by the agency. It has sent them to judicial custody till August 16.

The naxal attack took place when the reinforcement party of the Quick Response Team (QRT) was on its way to Purada where the naxals had torched 27 vehicles used for construction work of a national highway.
