The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) seized six gold bars worth Rs 1.67 crore from accused identified as Harish Kumar Chopra and Karan Kumar at the international airport. The AIU had received specific inputs about the same following which a thorough search for the accused led to their arrest on Saturday midnight.
Each gold bar weighed a kilogram and a cut piece of gold bar had a foreign trademark. The total weight was 6109 grams.
"Both of them had arrived in Mumbai from Bangkok by Air India flight (AI 331) dated this Saturday. On arriving at Mumbai airport, we found them to be suspicious after which they were called for checking just before they were about to exit from the gate. The gold was concealed in their sling bags and the same bag was to be handed over to another domestic passenger identified as Ajay Kumar who had arrived from Delhi from Air India flight (AI 191). The total estimated cost of the seized gold is about Rs 1.67 crore. We have registered a case under the Customs Act 1962 and all the three passengers have been arrested and are charged under relevant sections and further investigation is under progress." said an officer.
