According to the reports, the city has space for parking only 8,000 vehicles on the road. To add to the agony, Mumbai gets 450 new vehicles on its roads every single day.

The state government on Monday cleared as many as 13 proposals for multi-level parking lots in the city. The proposals were sent by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). All these parking lots will come up in south-central Mumbai and accommodate more than 20,000 vehicles.

The ever-increasing traffic congestion has forced the civic body to prevent rampant roadside parking. As per reports, the city has space for parking only 8,000 on the road. To add to the agony, Mumbai gets 450 new vehicles on its roads every single day.

To overcome the parking menace, BMC has decided to construct multi-level parking lots in south-central Mumbai on mill lands. These lots will come up on the private public partnership (PPP) basis. Out of the 24 plots of mill land proposed by the civic administration, 13 have been approved by the state government.

According to the parking policy designed by the BMC and approved by the government, the developer will get extra floor space index (FSI). The parking lots will operate automatically — tokens will be issued by machines to car owners.

Some of the plots where these lots will come up are Jupiter Mill, Lower Parel (2,370 vehicles), Worli (846), Byculla (1,655), Apollo Mill, Lower Parel (689), Mumbai Mill, Lower Parel (4,565), Elphinston Mill, Mahim (1,317), Lower Parel (385), Parel-Seweri (733), Mahim (2,500), Srinivas Mill, Lower Parel (3,856), and Marol (275).
