'By killing innocent people in broad daylight, the government has become a man-eater, instead of being their protector,' said RPI leader Ramdas Athavale.

Terming the police firing on farmers' protest in the Pune district on Tuesday -- in which three farmers were killed -- as unwarranted, Republican Party of India (RPI) leader Ramdas Athavale today said the state government should pay compensation of Rs5 lakh to the kin of each victim.

"The government should also give job to a member of each victim's family," Athawale said.

He was talking to reporters after meeting family members of the victims.

"By killing innocent people in broad daylight, the government has become a man-eater, instead of being their protector," he said.

"Is any action going to be taken against the guilty policemen?" he asked. Policemen involved in the incident should be suspended, he added.
