You will soon get monsoon alert SMS wherever in the state you are in. Seeking to make the best use of technology to alert its citizens and visitors alike, the state will send monsoon alert SMS to citizens in a specific location.
Unlike group SMSes that go out to all and sundry who are registered, this new system, called ‘mass SMS’, uses GIS technology and does not require any registration.
“Anyone who is in the city, taluka or district will get the SMS alert, regardless of whether or not s/he lives in that area,” said a senior official.
Thus, visitors from other states who enter Maharashtra will get the SMS alerts. The SMS alerts, being provided by IT firm Mastek, is expected to start from next week.
Meanwhile, the city experienced another dry day on Tuesday. “We expect the monsoon would resume in the next two to three days,” said NY Apte, deputy director general of Indian Meteorology Department.
