A 57-year-old woman succumbed to the H1N1 virus on Thursday at a private hospital in Vikhroli. This was the second case of swine flu death in the city this year.

“Shanta Jain was admitted to Godrej hospital with symptoms of breathlessness and vomiting on August 6. She had been tested positive for swine flu and was receiving treatment. She also had comorbid conditions of hypertension and diabetes. She succumbed on Thursday noon in the hospital,” said Dr Mangala Gomare, epidemiology cell, BMC.

“The civic officials have started contact tracing her family to detect further infection of swine flu,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, civic health commissioner.

Earlier this month, a 19-year-old Chembur resident Vinay Talewar succumbed to the virus at Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli. Since January, 35 people have died of the H1N1 virus in Maharashtra.
In 2011, there were no swine flu deaths.

In a related development, two new cases of H1N1 were detected in the city on Thursday, taking the tally of patients to 275 this year. While a 16-year-old boy from Mahim is seeking treatment on OPD basis, another 15-year-old boy from Prabhadevi has been admitted to a private hospital. Both patients have been started on Tamiflu and are stable, said a BMC official.
