H1N1 suspect, two others die in Pune

A 25-year-old woman suspected to be suffering from the H1N1 died on Monday. The victim, a resident of Sudarshannagar at Nigdi Pradhikaran, was undergoing treatment at the Lokmanya Hospital in Chinchwad.

District collector Chandrakant Dalvi confirmed that two other deaths had been registered due to H1N1 on Monday. The samples of the woman’s throat and nasal swabs were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) on Sunday. Dr Rajshekhar Ayyar, the medical director of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), said the reports are still awaited. “The lady was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) on Saturday. The samples were sent to NIV on Sunday night. However, she passed away around noon on Monday,” Ayyar said.

According to the hospital management, the woman died due to pneumonia. PCMC officials said that so far 10 persons have tested positive for H1N1 in the PCMC area.
Five patients, including a 13-year-old student from Ahilyadevi High School, were in critical condition on Monday at the Sassoon Hospital.

This includes two persons who were admitted earlier in the day. “Their condition is critical,” Ayyar said, adding that one of them is a 35-year-old who has been on ventilator.

A resident of Nigdi-Pradhikaran, the person was initially admitted to Niramaya Hospital in Chinchwad. He was shifted to Sassoon Hospital on Sunday. Another 31-year-old lady was also shifted to the hospital after her condition deteriorated. “She was admitted to Lokmanya Hospital, Nigdi. Her nasal and throat samples were sent to NIV on Sunday night. The reports are yet to come,” said Ayyar.

Doctors said the 55-year-old woman, who was admitted on August 8, continues to suffer from breathlessness and fever and is also on ventilator support. A 29-year-old woman from Kothrud was also admitted to the ICU on Monday afternoon and her samples were sent to NIV.
