The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has created three plastic banks where residents can go and deposit the banned plastic items lying at their homes ever since the plastic ban came into force on June 23.
The citizens, who had stockpiles of plastic bags and other sundry items which they once hoarded, said they did not know how to reuse or recycle them.
To help out the residents, the KDMC on Tuesday started the plastic banks, after a decision taken under the leadership of KDMC mayor Vineeta Rane. "People can come and deposit all the plastic they have and want to get rid of," says Prasad Thakur, public relations officer, KDMC.
The banks have been set up at Subhash maidan, near Adharwadi fire brigade station in Kalyan;
Sutikagruha in Dombivli East; and KDMC's D ward office in Kalyan East. The plastic will be accepted at these centers from 11am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 7 pm every day. The banks have been set up in association with the Plastic Manufacturers' Association and Sahyog NGO.
"Those who have more than 10 kg plastic can call these centers for a free pick-up," said Thakur.
The KDMC and some NGOs like Urja Foundation, Eco Samtol Works and Jagruk Nagrik Sanstha organise a pick-up of plastic from households every month. They collect plastic at Balak Mandir, Tilak Chowk and Swanandgar, which is then sent for recycling.
