Heavy rain slows down Metro

Heavy rains in Mumbai finally got to the Metro on Thursday, delaying services and even reducing their frequency.

Metro commuters, who had probably thought that the elevated corridor would be free from delays due to rain, were caught unawares. Services were late by up to 20 minutes during the first half of Thursday.

"#MumbaiMetro towards Ghatkopar running 10-15 minutes late. It's been stopping at each station for unusually long," tweeted one Indranel.

According to Metro authorities, there wasn't any technical failure or problem with the system and that the delay was deliberate for safety reasons and low visibility given the sharp curves on the corridor.

"Due to heavy rain since morning, operators were directed to slow the pace of trains by a few minutes. This led to delay in running of trains by six to eight minutes on the high frequency corridor," said a Mumbai Metro spokesperson.

Another official informed that not a single service was cancelled due to delays.
