“As a mother I personally believe that helmets should be made mandatory in the city as most of the youths are reluctant to wear them while riding motorcycles,” said police chief Meeran Chadha Borwankar at the police headquarters, Shivajinagar on Monday.

She was speaking after releasing a book on road safety patrol (RSP). She said, “I know the importance of helmets. My children also ride motorcycles. Most of the youths are not willing to wear helmets as they are not in sync with the fashion trends of the day.”

According to Borwankar, most people criticise traffic cops and do not help them. She said, “There are very few people who help traffic cops. Instead of helping, they criticise us. The critics should stand in a highly polluted area with the traffic police and help us,”

Noted caricaturist Mangesh Tendulkar was the chief guest, while
Credai-Pune Metro president Satish Magar was present on the occasion.

Tendulkar believed that the police should follow traffic rules properly. He said, “We should follow the traffic rules. The RSP book would definitely benefit students and reduce accidents in the city in the future.”

Magar, who helped the city traffic police print the RSP book, said, “We have forgotten traffic rules. We have not helped the city police, but have helped ourselves.”

Borwankar supported the Metro rail project for the city. She said, “The city needs the Metro for better transportation.”
