Pune police commissioner, Meeran Chadha Borwankar, said that wearing helmets will soon be made mandatory.

Concerned about the rise in fatal road accidents involving two-wheelers in the city, Pune police commissioner, Meeran Chadha Borwankar, said on Thursday that wearing helmets will soon be made mandatory.

The city police chief recently ordered the staff to wear helmets while riding motorcycles. She said, “Now, we want the citizens also to adopt this rule. We will proceed slowly as I am told that it was not successful in the past.” The mandatory helmet rule was withdrawn due to opposition from various parties and organisations.

In January 2010, the traffic police had begun imposing a fine of Rs100 for not wearing helmets. However, the fine is being imposed only if two-wheeler riders violate other  rules, like jumping signals or lane cutting
