"I am being targeted by my political opponents," is what former Public Works Department (PWD) minister and NCP strongman Chhagan Bhujbal had to say on the multiple raids by anti-graft sleuths at his properties.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday carried out searches at 17 of Bhujbal's properties in Nashik, Pune, Thane and Mumbai. The ACB action followed registration of an FIR against the senior NCP leader, his son Pankaj and nephew Sameer in connection with the alleged Rs150 crore new Maharashtra Sadan scam.
According to Bhujbal, all the decisions were collectively taken by the erstwhile cabinet and the final nod was given by the then chief minister. "How can I alone be the one who could take the final decisions. The proposals were kept before the cabinet and it was passed only after going through scrutiny," said Bhujbal.
He said if he is held responsible for the wrongdoings, other ministers in the previous cabinet as well as the then CM should also be held accountable.
Expressing amazement at the breakneck speed of investigation by the ACB, the NCP leader said, "I welcome all the investigation and hope that the truth comes out. But I am amazed at the speed in which the investigation is being carried out."
Bhujbal termed the whole action as politically motivated. "I have not done anything wrong and have been politically targeted by the opponents. My party is standing strong behind me and everything will be clear in time to come."
Meanwhile, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis refuted the allegations of vindictive approach by the government and said the ACB was probing the cases as per the directive of the Bombay High Court. He said the government give directions to the agency while a probe is on.
The CM said that the ACB had registered an FIR and was conducting searches as per legal provisions. "I have made it clear right from day one that whatever action would be taken would be as per the law and all those who are guilty would be punished. I had also made it clear that there was no political motive for this. If at all there is any mistake in the decision, one can always approach the court."
