After local youth saved more than a dozen women and children before official help arrived, 15 women injured in the slab collapse incident in Vile Parle on Tuesday were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Sharmila Gupta, 50, who was discharged on Wednesday morning from a private hospital, said: "I had been fasting since the night before and had no strength left. I fell back three times into the water while trying to climb out. I just kept my mouth shut and waited to be pulled out." The incident has scarred her mentally as well: "I am unsure if I will be able to step near a well again."

Sumitra Gupta was undergoing tests to ascertain the extent of internal injuries. "She has got injuries on her legs. One is swollen and grey," said her son Azad.

Most women complained of abrasions caused by the falling debris.

"Of the four patients we received, two were advised to take discharge as they only had minor abrasions," said Dr Rajeshree Jadhav, the facility's medical superintendent.

Shashank Vishwakarma, 19, a local resident who helped rescue the women, said: "Our college was closed for Gandhi Jayanti so we were at home. When we heard of the tragedy we took saris to the spot and used them as ropes. Luckily, the water was not very deep. But the situation got chaotic as everyone wanted to get out first."
