In Charles Correa's death, India loses a towering personality

My deepest condolences on the passing away of the noted architect, Mr. Charles Correa. May his soul rest in peace: PM," tweeted prime minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

Charles Correa, one of India's greatest architects and urban planners, passed away on Tuesday night, after a brief illness. He was 84.

Correa was winner of several national and international awards. In his career, he had designed landmarks like Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Ahmedabad, the Handloom Pavilion in Delhi, Bharat Bhavan and Vidhan Bhavan in Madhya Pradesh, Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, the Permanent Mission of India at the UN, New York, Kala Academy in Goa. Besides, he was the chief architect of Navi Mumbai.

In another tweet, he said, "Mr. Charles Correa's architectural marvels are widely cherished, reflecting his brilliance, innovative zeal & wonderful aesthetic sense: PM."

Born in Secunderabad in 1930, Correa did his college at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. He went on to study at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and MIT in Cambridge.
