India's longest amateur cycling team racing event – Veloraid – to be held in August, will have over 150 cyclists from across India and abroad participating for the title by covering a route that will start and end at Hiranandani Meadows, Thane.
The objective is to promote amateur cycling. "We have two annual cycling events. The first is 100km, and this one is 180km," said Jose George, Veloraid co-organiser and owner of Haybren Adventures. The event also encourages women and senior citizens to participate, as 10 minutes are discounted from the total time taken by the entire team.
Each team will consist of six members who will have to cover the stretch from Thane – Atgaon – Tansa – Vaitarna – Kardi – Thane. This route has varying gradients for an amateur cyclist to cover without much difficulty.
"There are certain rules. For example, the distance between the first and last (trailing) team member should not be more than 50 metres. And the timing of the last members crossing the finish line will be taken into account," added George.
Around 25 teams have registered for the event to be held on August 23. This is the third edition of Veloraid. Registrations will close on July 26.
According to the organisers, special permissions have been taken from civic bodies and security agencies to allow participants, volunteers and organisers to cycle through the most scenic routes in this region.
