Security at CSMT has always remained a concern for the administration

Earlier this month, Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials inspected the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) which is also the Central Railway headquarters. "This was an inspection made chiefly to check our security arrangements, the technologies installed at the station and vital points at CSMT," said a railway official.

Security at CSMT has always remained a concern for the administration. Sources said that the visit was mainly to check the existing security provided at the station, which was attacked by terrorists 10 years ago during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

At present, CSMT has several entry and exit points that are not gated. Sources said the IB inspected the entire site – the station and its entry and exit points, the heritage building, and even the subway leading to the station premises.

Among other things, the authorities have plans to improve the existing network of CCTVs by increasing the number of devices at the platforms, ticket-booking counters and foot-overbridges.

In the past few months, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has visited CSMT more than once. During his visits, he asked to upgrade safety measures and passenger amenities at the station. Officials said that as the station was going to be transformed into a world transport museum, the administration wanted to make sure that the place was shielded in terms of security.
