A major crisis has developed within the police force with senior IPS officer Vijay Kamble reportedly refusing to take charge as the Thane police commissioner.

Kamble was not available for comment. But sources close to him said that he finds it insulting that while an IPS officer junior to him (Rakesh Maria) has been made the police commissioner of Mumbai, he himself has been given charge of a relatively less important commissionerate like Thane.

Another senior IPS officer, Javed Ahmed is also deeply upset that he was overlooked for the psot of Mumbai police commissioner by the government. He was reportedly promised the post earlier, in April last year. He is credited with the view that Maria was appointed at the behest of NCP president and Union minister Sharad Pawar.

Both Kamble and Ahmed, who have not denied reports that they have put in their papers, are likely to be called by Home minister RR Patil in an effort to assuage their hurt feelings. Certain former IPS officers are expected to take up their cause with CM Prithviraj Chavan.
