Several cases in the past five years are damning.
Pune is fast earning the distinction of becoming the ragging capital of Maharashtra, thanks to a number of sensational ragging stories coming to light in recent times. The ragging incident of a medical student Akhilesh Shukla has once again opened up a Pandora’s box.
In September 2005, the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), a country’s premiere medical college in Pune, was rocked with allegations of excessive ragging. In the past, the incidents were often dismissed as “physical reorientation” of juniors by the seniors.
It was only when six first-year students fell ill that the authorities paid attention. Vice Admiral VK Singh, director general, AFMC ordered a high-level probe into the incident. As of today, nothing has come out of the probe.
