A 22-year-old woman, Parveen Shaikh, allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on last Saturday as her lover refused to marry her.

A 22-year-old woman, Parveen Shaikh, allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on last Saturday as her lover refused to marry her.

The victim, a resident in Pimple Saudagar, died on Monday night in a private hospital. She had sustained 93% burn injuries.

Her brother Mohammad Nasim Shaikh, 33, lodged an FIR at the Hinjewadi police station against the lover, Nasim Ansari alias Shadeek Usmani, 25, a resident of Thergaon.

The police said the duo was in love and had planned to marry.

“But after some time, Nasim refused to marry her claiming that he is already married. The victim became mentally disturbed and both had a heated argument on September 29. The woman had threatened to kill herself if the youth did not marry her,’’ the
police said.

On last Saturday around 2am, the woman poured kerosene on her body and set herself afire. Later, she was taken to a private
hospital.
