Businessman and actor Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta recently registered a complaint with the Malabar Hill police, saying someone illegally accessed his credit card information and used it to do transactions worth Rs3.41 lakh in Australia and Helsinki.
“Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta has lodged a complaint with the Malabar Hill police about the cyber crime. The fraud was committed using seven e-mail IDs. We are still investigating as to how exactly it was done,” said additional commissioner of police, south region, Krishna Prakash.
Police sources said between August 8 and September 2, the accused, who have not been identified as yet, got credit card details of Mehta, 53, a resident of Vir Bhavan in Malabar Hill.
“Inquiries revealed that the transactions were made in Australia and Helsinki. After having learnt about the fraud, Mehta gave an application to the police to look into the matter on September 26. Once preliminary inquiries were over, a case was registered in this regard on November 6,” said a source.
The police have registered a case under sections 419 (impersonation) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 66C (whoever fraudulently or dishonestly makes use of electronic signature, password or any other unique identification feature of any other person) and 66D (whoever by means of any communication device or computer resource cheats by impersonation) of the Information Technology Act against the accused.
