Finally, Pravin Thapa (18) has a reason to smile. On a waiting list for a long time, the teen underwent a surgery to remove stones from his kidneys at KEM hospital on Monday. The surgery was a part of a special drive, launched by the urology department doctors.
The doctors now plan to operate upon 50 stone patients within the next four days. KEM hospital is one of the biggest hospitals in Mumbai, catering to patients from not only the city but different parts of the state. The workload is so huge that doctors have to put patients requiring surgery on waiting lists. At present, the list has over 150 names.
The special drive will be conducted by 10 surgeons from different parts of the state, who are also alumni of KEM's urology department. In a private hospital, such a procedure can cost anywhere between Rs60,000 and Rs1.5 lakh. KEM is charging around Rs2,000-3,000 for the surgeries.
Dr Sujata Patwardhan, head of KEM's urology department, said, "Despite patients' complaints, we had no option but to create a waiting list as the workload is huge. We have organised this drive to tackle this issue, and our former students will help."
Thapa, a resident of Nepal, came to Mumbai after developing kidney stones. Here, he lived with his brother in Goregaon. At the time, the KEM hospital gave him an appointment for one-and-a-half months later.
"We are very lucky that my brother-in-law got operated after a short wait. He was in a lot of pain. There are many other patients in the ward waiting for the surgery. After the operation, he developed pain in his legs. We hope everything turns out well," said Usha Thapa, Pravin's sister-in-law.
