The KEM hospital is all set to send more than 300 CDs to city schools to help teachers deal with suicidal behaviour in children.
Prepared by the KEM hospital’s psychiatry department, the aim of the CD is to help schools deal with depression among students during exams.
KEM dean Dr Sanjay Oak said, “The psychiatry department has been holding seminars on how to handle suicidal tendencies in people. With an increasing number of queries from schools on how to deal with students during the exam season, the department took the decision to send them the CD.”
The CDs have been compiled in four languages: English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. “We are waiting for some permissions, after which the CDs will be handed over to the schools,” added Oak.
Oak pointed out that students need to be counselled all year round, adding, “Doctors from the psychiatry department have been counselling schools during exam time, as the number of suicide cases goes up then.”
“Exams are stressful because of the competition that kids face from their classmates and the pressure by parents to perform well. The CD will help parents and teachers understand conflicts,” said Shubhangi Parker, head of the psychiatry department, KEM.
