Singh died of severe head injuries at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri.

A four-year-old student fell off a balcony in the passageway on the fourth floor of the building she lived in and succumbed to her injuries in a city hospital on Monday. The reason she lost balance and fell, it is being said, is that the school bag she had been carrying was so heavy that she lost her centre of gravity.

The name of the victim is Sarika Singh, a resident of Golden Palace building in the Alkapuri area of Nalasopara East and a student of GD Ideal High School. She had been heading to her flat when she leaned from the balcony in the passage and, since the bag she was carrying was too heavy for her, she lost her balance and fell off the balcony.

Singh died of severe head injuries at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri.

"The girl was carrying a heavy bag and she tried to lean from the ledge of the balcony after she heard someone calling out for her. This is when she lost balance due to her bag and fell off the balcony, leading to severe injuries. She was rushed to Alliance hospital, but was later shifted to a hospital in Andheri," said a Tulinj police officer.

"We have registered a case of accidental death in this regard and are investigating the case further, although prima facie it appears that the girl lost her balance due to the heavy bag. But if the parents complain of foul play, we will investigate the case accordingly," said Sudarshan Potdar, assistant inspector, Tulinj police station.
