The long awaited and newly established Koregaon Park police station will start functioning from a shed on a road adjoining Lanes 4 and 5 on Saturday.

The state home department is yet to provide funds for the police station, but the city police have constructed a temporary shed on the land. After 3 years of agonising wait, the city police took possession of 10 gunthas of land for the police station.

Deputy Commissioner of police (zone II), Raghunath Khaire, officially took possession of the plot after getting the order from senior police officers. The plot is on Lane 4, Koregaon Park, Survey No 112-2.

“With prominent establishments like Osho International Commune, Chabad House and hotels in the area, a separate police station was necessary. Also, there are many foreigners living in the area, so it would definitely make a difference in the future,” said the officer.

The new police station is headed by senior police inspector Shivaji Kamble.

Two police inspectors and a constabulary of 23 personnel have been allocated to the police station.

An additional 80 constables will join the police station on Saturday.

Additional commissioner of police (crime) AD Shinde told DNA that the police station would have a jurisdiction of 5 square km to include Koregaon Park, Boat Club Road, Dhole Patil Road, parts of Queens Garden, Morwada Bridge and Kalyaninagar bridge junction.

The demand for a police station for Koregaon Park picked up after February 13, 2010, after the first ever terror strike in Pune at German Bakery. Seventeen people were killed and several others injured.
