Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the legendary Hindustani classical vocalist and Bharat Ratna awardee, is critical. The 88-year-old renowned khayal singer was admitted to Sahyadri Hospital here on December 31 for old-age related ailments.

“Pandit Joshi is in the intensive care unit and under observation. He was being treated for ailments relating to the upper respiratory tract, intestine and kidney,” Dr Aashish Jaiswal, the hospital’s chief medical administrator, said.

Joshi is a member of the Kirana Gharana and was awarded the country’s highest civilian award in 2008. Speaking to DNA, his daughter Shubhada Mulgund said her father had been admitted to the hospital a few days ago.

“My father is in the intensive care unit and is not responding to medication as he should. Doctors tell us that this is because of his age. We are confident that he will recover,” she said.
