Maharashtra has longest Metro rail network under construction: Centre's data

In case of Maharashtra, 31-km of Metro network is under construction at Pune and around 38-km Metro being under construction in Nagpur.

According to the data released by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the state has 233-km of Metro railway network under construction including Metro corridors being built in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur; that is longest in the country when compared to around nine states where Metro corridors are under construction.

Of the total 233-km, Mumbai alone has around 163-km of Metro corridors that are under construction in the city which includes Colaba-Seepz Metro-3 underground corridor, Dahisar-DN Nagar-Mandale Metro-2 corridor, Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli Metro-4 corridor followed by Dahisar East-Andheri East Metro-7 corridor. This is longest Metro rail network under construction anywhere in the city followed by Kolkata that has around 108-km of Metro network under construction, and ranks second overall.

In case of Maharashtra, 31-km of Metro network is under construction at Pune and around 38-km Metro being under construction in Nagpur. A official from Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) that is executing several Metro projects in the city said, "Though the data shared is India specific but Mumbai and Maharashtra are places where all the private companies have their eyes considering they have longest and highest number of Metro corridors under construction which definitely gets a lot of business and job opportunity including skilled and unskilled labour."

The MMRDA official added, "Easily around 20,000 people must have got job opportunity due to so many Metro corridors being under construction. This will be followed by job opportunities that will also come during the operations stage of these under construction Metro corridors."

In Mumbai, alone by the year end, close to 200-km of Metro network will be under construction with construction on one more Metro corridor between Lokhandwala-Vikhroli starting by December 2018. In the next five years, the operational Metro network in Mumbai Metropolitan Region of more than 200-km that will be carrying more than 50 lakh passengers daily equivalent to the carrying capacity of suburban local train in the city.

However, in terms of Metro corridors being operational, Maharashtra and Mumbai has mere 11.40-km of Metro network between Versova and Ghatkopar being under construction. Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) currently has around 250-km long Metro network that is operational.

Meanwhile, third highest for under construction Metro network is Karnataka, that has around 72-km-long Metro network under construction followed by Delhi having 52-km of Metro network under construction along with it Uttar Pradesh that has around 44-km-long of Metro network under construction.
