On Saturday, Maharashtra Legislative Assembly approved the Symbiosis Skill and Open University Bill which will pave the way for the first skill university in the state in private set-up. The bill now awaits approval from the Upper House.
The University will be set up in Pune. It will offer skilled based courses with some of them being distance learning ones. The varsity will have choice based credit system, faculty from industry and focus on applied research.
The University will support the Make in India and Make in Maharashtra programs, says Vinod Tawde, education minister of Maharashtra.
India's first skill development university is currently being set up in Nagpur under a public private partnership. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has started the process to set up Skill Development University and Management Centre which is expected to cost Rs 324 crore.
