Maharashtra to give Rs 500,000 to Sushil Kumar

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Wednesday announced a reward of Rs 500,000 to wrestler Sushil Kumar, who bagged a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Wednesday announced a reward of Rs 500,000 to wrestler Sushil Kumar, who bagged a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.

In a statement congratulating Kumar, Deshmukh said the wrestler has created Indian sports history by bagging the medal and “we are proud of his achievement".

Deshmukh said that prior to Kumar, Maharashtra's wrestler, late Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav of Karad district, had bagged a bronze medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Sushil Kumar won the bronze medal in men's freestyle 66 kg by defeating Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan.
