Even as the Mumbai-over-Bombay issue continues to grab headlines, a letter written to chief justice Swatanter Kumar on May 17 has urged the Bombay High Court to be recognised as Maharashtra High Court.
Written by former encounter specialist Sachin Waze, on behalf of Support, an NGO, the letter states that as per an amendment in Article 168 of the constitution of India, the word “Bombay” was replaced by the word “Maharashtra”. It further states that according to the Maharashtra Adaptation of Laws (State and concurrent subjects) order, 1960, the “High Court of
Bombay” was replaced by “High Court of Maharashtra”, however, the change is yet
to be implemented.
Waze, a prime accused in the Khwaja Yunus custodial death case of 2003, resigned from the police force last year and started Support, for free legal aid, in December 2007.
Speaking to DNA, Waze said, “I was researching the whole hue and cry over the Mumbai-Bombay issue, and in the process, I came across the order of 1960 which prompted me to write a letter to the chief justice.”
The Chief Justice has been urged to implement the Adaptation of Laws order at the earliest and issue necessary orders to all the departments of the high court to bring about the change in its name. “We have written a letter to the chief justice and we are hoping that he will pass an administrative order to this effect,” Waze said.
