A group of panelists from the Micro Secure Think Tank (MSTT) has come up with a research paper on Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) project.
Post 26/11 attack, the Indian government decided to start a project of issuing unique identity cards to every Indian to keep a check on illegal immigrants and appointed Nandan Nilekani, who served as the CEO and MD of Infosys, as the chief of UIDAI project. Nilekani will be taking charge on July 9.
Dr P Sekhar, executive member, MSTT, said, “This is a mammoth project, and it will take nearly 5 years to complete. Also, huge funding would be required for it. It would be one of the first such projects in the world, so it needs to be done taking care of all the aspects to make it successful.’’
The paper suggests that the card should be in a smart card format which could be used at various places like bank ATMs, hospitals. Card readers should be installed at all such places for the police to check the person’s identity and credentials.
In a medical emergency, his card can be used by doctors to check information like his blood group, medical history etc.
