A man, who wanted to buy land in his native village, allegedly sold his 19-year-old wife to his brother in exchange for money. The teenage woman approached the Nalasopara police, after which her brother-in-law was arrested on Wednesday.
The arrested accused, Bablu Soni, 24, told the police that his brother, Raju Soni, 30, had approached him two months ago, saying he wanted to purchase a piece of land in their home town but did not have the money for the same. Bablu offered Raju the money in exchange for his wife. The couple had been married six months ago. Once he got the money, Raju left for his ancestral village.
“In her complaint, the woman has said that Bablu first raped her on October 20. He continued exploiting her, saying she belonged to him as her husband had sold her to him. He raped her on several occasions and threatened to kill her if she spoke to anyone about this,” said Devendra Chauhan, assistant inspector of Nalasopara police station.
The police have arrested Bablu for rape, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation under sections of the Indian Penal Code . He has been remanded in police custody till November 15.
