While the focus during the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon is on the runners, the lack of toilets remains a serious concern.
"There are thousands of women runners and very few toilets," said Tina Varghese, a half-marathon regular. She said it is worse for first-timers as there are no clear indicators to the toilets.
Last year, the organisers installed just 15 racks of temporary toilets and 55 chemical loos en route. "Older women and those vulnerable to infections can suffer if they hold for too long," said Rishma Pai, consultant gynaecologist at Lilavati hospital. She said runners are dehydrated and holding urine for long in such condition can be harmful.
"There will be 20 racks of 10 toilets each at Azad Maidan and Bandra Reclamation. Besides, 75 chemical loos and two racks of 13 chemical urinals will be put up along the route," said Bruno Goveas, director, media relations, Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. He said three Sulabh Sauchalayas will also be available.
The event will be held on Sunday, January 15.
