This match was made in a hospital. A couple who got admitted in KEM hospital for kidney transplantation in 2006, will tie the knot on New Year Day. Senior nephrologist from Hinduja hospital Dr Jatin Kothari said, “It’s positive for the society that two people who have undergone the same ordeal are marrying. To create more awareness among people on kidney transplantation, they have set up an NGO.” Kishore Suryawanshi hails from Jalgaon and works in an advertising agency, while Aarti Kashikar is from Madhya Pradesh.Five years ago, suffering from kidney failure, they came to KEM hospital for treatment. Both were started on dialysis while they waited for donors for the transplantation. During the treatment, they got to know each other. Eventually, they fell in love and decided to get married. They also found their respective donors; while Suryawanshi’s sister donated a kidney to him, Kashikar got one from her mother.

“We have known each other for a long time. We also know about each other’s health issues, nothing is hidden. We are very happy with our decision to get married,” said Suryawanshi. He added, “In most cases, people who have undergone organ transplant find it difficult to get married. I have started an NGO in my sister’s name — Chaya Kidney Foundation - to counsel people on transplantation. Aarti helps me run it.”

Kothari said, “In my 15-year career I have never seen transplant patients tying the knot. The couple has set a good example for the society. When they decide to have children, both will have to take some medication after consulting a doctor to avoid any future problems. But other than that, both can lead a normal life.”
