Matunga's Marubai Gavdevi Mandir, which is managed by Maharashtrian trustees, is a place of worship open to all religious denominations from all walks of life, celebrating Navratri in a typical South Indian way by displaying Golu (display of idols and dolls).
For over 300 years, Shri Marubai is being worshiped as Kuladevi (family deity) or as Gavdevi (goddess of the village). Marubai has a history of atleast three centuries.
Situated at Matunga, known as Marubai Tekdi Gaon, which was shortened to Ma Tun Ga or Matunga in the British era. It was then a small village and temple of Shri Marubai, a form of Goddess Durga, was situated on a small hill. The goddess at this temple is a 'Swayambhu,' meaning the idol came on its own. During the nine days of Navratri, various religious ceremonies such as Kalash Sthapana, Abhishek, Haldi-Kumkum Pooja, Saraswati Aawahan, Kumari Poojan and Ashtami Homams are held.
